I turned my water off during the winter and drained the system. Now one of my toilet makes a whining noise when it is flushed. It is really loud and makes the toilet almost unuseable. Can anybody suggest a reason and cure?

Is it during the flushing itself (could be the seals somewhere have dried out and cracked) or is it when the tank is refilling?

If it lasts as long as the time it takes to refill the cistern then it will be either the isolating valve or the float valve within the cistern. Water passing through a small orifice at high pressure will make a copper feed pipe 'sing'. It may be a bit of grit wedged in the valve or it might need a new washer. The problem may be cured by adjusting the adjacent stop valve, opening or closing it a bit.
If this does not cure the problem, turn the supply off, dissemble the float valve in the cistern and wash componant parts under a running tap. Examine the washer and if defective replace with one from your nearest Brico. Re-assemble and turn on the water back on adjusting until the minimum sound is achieved.

I suspect that during the winter a Premier League football club manager crept in for mid-season hibernation. Your turning on the water supply has awoken him - but don't worry the season will end in a few weeks and he will move to his summer resort.

o.f.
