Hi, I am about to purchase my first goats but I think that I have to register and get a number first , ear tags etc and a stockbook. Where do i go to register and is there anything else I need to do? Many thanks.

Unless you already have other animals ( cattle etc. ) , you would need to contact the local Chambre d'Agriculture for the administrative details, and of course possible assistance.

It may be necessary to consult the PLU= Plan Local d'Urbanisme - if not already done - , if you are in a town, to see if this authorised - probably depends on the number ) - because then there will be question of distances to neighbouring houses - usually at least 100 meters .

Thanks for the info pomhorn i am in dept 87 and I think my nearest Min of ag is in limoges can I do it by letter or do I have to go personally.?I live in a rural area so dont think proximity to houses is a problem as i have an old farm with animal barns etc I have chickens and geese but these will be my first mammals!

I have been given details for the EDE in the Haute Vienne. Its l’EDE 87 safran 2 av Georges Guingouin 87350 PANAZOL , tel: 05 87 50 40 30.

Or just phone the Chamber of Agriculture at Limoges and explain that you want to keep goats and they will send you a form to fill in to apply for a keeper number, herd number and marking number. They will also send a form to order tags and applicators should you have any goat kids born this year. (Or tag any untagged animals you buy). You'll get yet another form to order movement documents.

You will also need a form to designate your vet. You should make sure the animals you buy are brucellosis free (ask for proof which includes the individual tag numbers) and if they aren't, you will need to get them tested yourself - straight away.

You don't need a 'stock book' but have to keep a 'register of elevage' which is in the format of your own choice and can be on a computer as long as you print a hard copy off every 3 months. It contains such info as movements to and from your site, food you've fed your animals, treatment they have been given and vet visits, details of your vet, prescriptions, all your registration info, tag records (which ones have ben applied and when).

This site has a good general guide: ... 2200411033 - its for the Eure but is the best I've found. I haven't actually looked for Haute Vienne as I've been mainly searching for the Charente but as I need to register my sites in 87 separately now, can you let me know if you find any good info for your department??
